Why mental health at work matters

Performance Management Plan

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well being. It impacts how we feel and act, and influences how we make choices, react to others, and respond to stress. Good mental health usually involves general positivity and the ability to handle daily tasks. On the other end of the spectrum, poor mental health can involve specific mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety.

A study conducted in 2022 on mental health and wellbeing in Australia revealed that 43.7%  of individuals aged 16-85 had experienced a mental health disorder somewhere in their lives.

The impact within the workplace of widespread mental health issues include losses in productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher support payments (e.g. for sick leave and workers compensation payments).

Considering that people typically spend one third of their day at work, it is evident that a negative work environment, unsupportive management, and toxic workplaces can significantly affect the mental health and well being of employees. One of the most effective ways of improving mental health in the workplace is by raising awareness and reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues within workplaces.

Mental health is also dealt with in various pieces of legislation that all employers are covered by such as workplace health and safety laws and anti-discrimination legislation that provides protections to employees with a mental health issue.

An employer has a legal obligation to ensure the health and safety of their workers. Recently updated regulations around psychosocial safety have made it important for business owners to understand their obligations. These obligations are another lens for business owners to look at mental health, as mismanaging mental health issues can open the business up to certain claims being made, including workers compensation.

FAQs

Questions?
We have answers.

How can I promote mental health in the workplace?

There are many ways an employer or manager can address mental health, and support mental health in their teams. Promoting mental health by reducing the stigma, offering the employee coping strategies through professional external help, or arranging for modifications such as increased work life balance can greatly improve mental health.

What are the risk factors for mental health on a workplace?

Poor mental health can have multiple risk factors both for the business, and for the employee. Workplace mental health is serious, which creates a genuine risk for legal issues should a case be made against the employer. A mentally healthy workplace is a necessary element of WHS. Other risks a business may find when their workforce has poor mental health can be decreased productivity due to workplace stress, a longer time for recovery should the employee leave, and a domino effect on other colleagues’ work and mental wellbeing.

What mental health conditions can be worsened at work?

Anxiety, acute stress, depressions, and many other mental health conditions can be worsened at work if the environment contributes to additional stresses. When a business environment becomes a negative space, it can drastically harm mental health in an employee working there.

Is a performance management plan beneficial to staff members?

Yes, a performance management plan is beneficial for both employees and their overall teams. These plans help employees improve their practices, enabling them to grow and develop in their careers. They also provide an opportunity for employees to get support from management.
