CTF Tool Allowance

The Building and Construction Award established by the Fair Work Commission, sets out the minimum terms and conditions of employment for workers in the building and construction industry who perform work on-site.

It covers various classifications within the industry, including tradespersons, apprentices, and labourers, and includes provisions regarding wages, allowances, overtime, leave entitlements, and other employment conditions. The award aims to ensure fair and equitable treatment for workers in the building and construction sector and provides a framework for resolving disputes and addressing workplace issues.

Expenses Allowances

The Award encompasses provisions for various expenses allowances, including a Tool and Protective Clothing Allowance:

Employees are entitled to a tool and clothing allowance to maintain and provide standard tools as outlined in the Award. Payments for these allowances must adhere to the table specified in clause 21.1(a). If employers mandate the use of protective clothing, equipment, or any other tools, they must either negotiate reimbursement terms with their employees or provide the necessary items themselves.

Notably, if steel toe-capped boots are required, the employer must reimburse employees for the initial purchase cost, with replacements every 6 months subject to wear and tear or earlier if agreed upon.

Compensation for Damaged Clothes and Tools:

Employees whose clothing, equipment, or tools sustain damage from corrosive substances during work duties are entitled to compensation covering the damaged items. This arrangement is subject to agreement between the employee and employer. Furthermore, under specific circumstances such as fire or theft, the employer must reimburse the employee up to a maximum amount stipulated in the Award.

This reimbursement covers the loss of tools or clothes securely stored or during transportation as directed by the employer, or if lost over water, or during employee absence due to injury or illness, provided the employer is duly informed. Additionally, if the employer mandates the use of spectacles with toughened glass lenses, they are responsible for covering the cost of toughening the lenses.

It’s essential to note that these entitlements solely pertain to tools used during the employee’s job, with any reimbursement based on the current replacement value of similar-quality new tools. Any instances of theft must be reported to the police before making a claim to the employer for stolen tools replacement.
